Children’s Aid Society
The Children’s Aid Society is registered under the Societies Act. An Executive Committee is formed from among its members, and this is the governing body for the operations of the Home. The Society operates the Melrose Home for children who require residential care.
The Children’s Aid Society is probably one of the oldest philanthropic organisations in Singapore, having been formed in the late 1800′s as the St Nicholas Home. Its present name was established in 1902. The Society celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2002.
The Home generally cater to the needs of children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old, who require care or protection. However, they are prepared to help children of other ages as well, depending on their needs and what is in their best interests.
Children requiring care and/or protection are those whose parents or family members are unable to provide care or to supervise them. These children are brought to our attention either by the government agencies, Members of Parliament, family service centers, hospitals, schools, members of the public, or by the family members themselves.
It costs the Society an average of $43,000 a month to operate their programme at Melrose Home.
About a quarter of the total expenses is given as a grant by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports based on the number of children in residence. The Society has to raise the remaining portion of the expenses.
The Society appreciates the goodwill and generosity of corporations, foundations, other organisations, and individual citizens and persons for their support and assistance in helping the Society run its programme.
The Society does its own fund raising but maintains a link with the Community Chest for future expansion projects.
